What Are Semiconductor Integrated Circuits?
A Semiconductor Integrated Circuit (IC) is the “brain” of most modern electronic devices. From smartphones, computers, and electric vehicles to medical devices, artificial intelligence (AI) systems, data centers, and satellites, these technologies all rely on semiconductor integrated circuits.

Today, the semiconductor industry is regarded as one of the most strategically important technology sectors, playing a vital role in driving digital transformation and global innovation.
The Most Advanced Semiconductor Technologies Today
1. nm and Smaller Process Technologies
Leading chip manufacturers are developing 2 nm process technology, enabling tens of billions of transistors to be integrated into a single compact chip. This technology offers several key advantages:
- Higher processing performance;
- Lower power consumption;
- Higher transistor density.
2. Chiplets – Modular Chip Design
Instead of manufacturing an entire system on a single large chip die, Chiplet architecture divides a chip into multiple specialized modules connected through high-speed interconnects.
This approach helps to:
- Reduce manufacturing costs;
- Improve scalability;
- Enhance performance.
3. 3D Packaging
3D packaging technology vertically stacks multiple layers of chips, providing significant advantages, including:
- Higher data bandwidth;
- Reduced physical footprint;
- Lower latency;
- Improved computing performance for AI applications and data centers.
4. AI-Specific Chips
AI processors, including AI Accelerators and Neural Processing Units (NPUs), are optimized to perform machine learning and deep learning computations with high performance and low power consumption.
These specialized processors are increasingly essential to meet the demands of increasingly large and complex AI models.
Key Applications
Modern semiconductor integrated circuits serve as the foundation for numerous technologies and industries, including:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI);
- Smartphones;
- Electric and autonomous vehicles;
- Satellite and aerospace systems;
- Smart medical devices;
- Smart factories and Industry 4.0;
- Internet of Things (IoT);
- Data centers and cloud computing;
- 5G and 6G networks.
Emerging Development Trends
In the coming years, the semiconductor industry is expected to focus increasingly on:
- Energy-efficient chips and Green Computing;
- Edge AI, enabling AI processing directly on devices;
- Next-generation semiconductor materials such as Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN) for power electronics;
- Silicon Photonics to accelerate data transmission in data centers;
- Chip design based on open architectures such as RISC-V.
Opportunities for Vietnam
Vietnam has significant opportunities to participate in the global semiconductor value chain through:
- Developing a highly skilled semiconductor workforce;
- Integrated Circuit Design (IC Design);
- Semiconductor testing and packaging;
- Research in AI, IoT, and embedded systems;
- Collaboration with international semiconductor companies and research institutions.
This is an opportune time for students and engineers in the technology sector to invest in knowledge and skills related to electronics, semiconductor circuits, hardware programming, and artificial intelligence.
